Traveler’s Guide to Nursing and Allied Health: Nursing Engagement

A new report exposes a need for more engagement among nurses. Less than half of all nurses report being “fully engaged” at work, according to the 2023 PRC National Engagement Report. Out of the more than 1,900 nurses interviewed, only 45.1 percent were categorized as “emotionally and intellectually connected to their hospitals” or “fully engaged.” “Engaged” ranked second at 40.5 percent of respondents, followed by “unengaged” at 14.4 percent. PRC, a market research and consulting company, conducted the survey at 37 hospitals nationwide. The survey questioned nurses on engagement, retention, and burnout to provide a greater perspective on the industry’s workforce shortage and financial impact.

Boomers Lead

Boomers reported the highest “fully engaged” rate at 53.4 percent, followed by Gen X at 47.0 percent, and Millennials at 36.8 percent. Day shift workers had higher rates of being “fully engaged” at 47.8 percent compared to night shift workers at 38.1 percent.

PRC conducted the survey, saying, “Understanding the elements contributing to nurse engagement is one of the most pressing issues for today’s healthcare leaders. Whether from the perspective of losing and replacing high-performing nurses, retaining the wrong nurses, or the quality, safety, and patient experience costs to excellent care, engagement, and its corollaries are big business with significant implications.”

PRC found the three top drivers of engagement to be autonomy, RN-to-RN teamwork collaboration, and leadership access and responsiveness. Nurses are more likely to be fully engaged: “If they believe they are active participants” in patient care decision-making and when leadership values their opinions, they feel they are respected and part of a supportive team, and when leadership is accessible, responsive, and trustworthy.

Even though less than half of all nurses are fully engaged, the report found that 82 percent of RNs plan to remain with their current organization for the next two years. Read the full report at 2023 PRC National Engagement Report.
