No matter where you’re assignment takes you this Independence Day, there are plenty of great options across the country for celebrating July 4th. From New York to San Diego and hundreds of municipalities in between, cities are pulling out all the stops for razzle-dazzle Fourth of July festivities. Cookouts, parades, fireworks−check out the events and locations below, near you.
New York, NY
More than 3 million people descend on New York City for the annual Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks. The show launches from barges along the East River near Midtown Manhattan. Explorers can enjoy the sights throughout the city, including official viewing spots at Gantry Plaza State Park, Newtown Barge Park, Transmitter Park, Marsha P. Johnson State Park, 1st Ave. and E. 20th St., 1st Ave. and E. 34th St., and 1st Ave. and E 42nd St. There will be performances from the U.S. Army Field Band, Cajun fiddler and singer Amanda Shaw, and The Dorothy Maynor Singers from the Harlem School of the Arts. But the 4th isn’t the only day to celebrate. Concerts, dance parties, and other events are being held leading up to the national holiday in the Big Apple.
Boston, MA

Celebrate with a million of your closest friends at one of the country’s largest 4th of July celebrations. Enjoy live music, entertainers, historical reenactments, Freedom Trail site tours and events, and an artisan market all day. Boston Harborfest celebrates the city’s colonial, Revolutionary War, and maritime history and heritage. Not off on the 4th? No worries, events run from June 30 through Independence Day with the Boston Independence Day Concert and Fireworks featuring a free concert by the Boston Pops before a spectacular 30-minute fireworks extravaganza.
Philadelphia, PA
Explorers on assignment in or near the “City of Brotherly Love,” on July 4th have a jammed packed schedule of events and celebrations. The fun kicks off in late June in a build-up to the ultimate July 4th celebration with a free concert featuring Demi Lovato and Ludacris on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and fireworks display over the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Be sure to visit Philadelphia’s Historic District, including Independence Hall, where the Founding Fathers adopted the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the Liberty Bell Center, the Besty Ross House, and Elfreth’s Alley.
Washington, D.C.

Celebrate freedom in the Nation’s Capital with Fireworks at the National Mall. The festivities start early with a parade featuring marching bands, floats, giant balloons, military units, drill teams, and more along Constitution Avenue between NW 7th Street and NW 17th Street. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival highlights Ozarks and “Creative Encounters” culture on the Mall from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. There will also be kid-friendly activities and a concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol before pyrotechnics light up the night sky.
New Orleans, LA
Take part in the 4th of July Festivities in the Big Easy at 4th Fest in Crescent Park. Explorers will enjoy live music, food, and drinks at the French Market before being treated to Go Fourth on the River, a Mississippi riverfront fireworks display.
Freedom Over Texas
Explorers can witness the “Texas-sized” largest land-based fireworks show in the U.S. at Freedom Over Texas in Houston on July 4th. Country star Chris Young will headline the six hours of festivities along with 6-time Grammy Nominee Yola, and R&B band TMF formerly Frankie Beverly and Maze. Proceeds from the event aid the Houston Food Bank.
Chicago

Maybe you’re working on the Fourth of July but have off the weekend before the national holiday? Navy Pier has fireworks shows throughout the summer, but on Saturday, July 1 they’ll put on a special red, white, and blue extravaganza. There’s also an all-day July 4th party at Grant Park with a concert, beer garden, and Explorers can enjoy fireworks and other events in neighboring cities.
San Diego
Big Bay Boom Take in California’s largest fireworks display at Big Bay Boom on San Diego Bay. The July 4th celebration is “A Salute to the Military Families of our Service Workers.” Explorers can view the one-and-a-half-hour show from multiple locations, including Shelter Island, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero, Marina District, Coronado Ferry Landing, or on the water.
Los Angeles
Universal Studios puts on a stunning firework display with live music performances, specially themed décor, and more, including a special light project experience at Hogwarts Castle. Baseball fans can head to Dodger Stadium and watch LA host the Pittsburgh Pirates, followed by a fireworks show. In the mood for something different?
