Nurses Make the Difference: Celebrating Nurses Week 2024

Facilities, organizations, and communities across the nation will recognize and celebrate the more than 5 million nurses delivering quality care this Nurses Week, May 6 – 12. This year’s theme, “Nurses Make the Difference,” could not be more appropriate as these superhero healthcare workers again and again demonstrate their value to patient wellness and recovery.

The American Nursing Association is celebrating and rallying communities across the country in honor of nurses with its “Nurses Light Up the Sky” campaign. The campaign encourages landmark buildings to turn on the light for nurses. Participants include The Wrigley Building in Chicago, the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Capella Towers in Minneapolis, and Houston City Hall.

The History of National Nurses Week

Establishing recognition for nurses was not easily achieved. In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Dwight D. Eisenhower to proclaim a “Nurse Day.” Sutherland wasn’t successful, but her efforts would inspire others. A National Nurses Week was observed in October 1954, marking the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to Crimea. In 1972, the House of Representatives sent a resolution for a “National Registered Nurses Day,” but President Richard Nixon failed to sign it.  Eventually, a nurses’ day and week were established. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation for a “National Recognition Day for Nurses” to be observed on May 6. Eight years later, the American Nurses Association’s Board of Directors expanded the recognition, declaring May 6 – 12, 1991, National Nurses Week, with the week ending on Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Each year, we celebrate the nursing profession on those dates.
