Celebrating Emergency Nurses Week: Heroes in Scrubs

Every year, we take a moment to honor our emergency nurses, who work in one of the most challenging healthcare environments. Emergency Nurses Week, October 6-12, highlights these clinical heroes who provide care and support during the critical moments of a patient’s life.

Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) has designated the second Wednesday in October as Emergency Nurses Day. In 2001, this celebration expanded to a full week, allowing for greater recognition of these healthcare professionals’ vital contributions.

A Closer Look
  • According to the ENA, approximately 167,000 ER nurses work in the US.
  • The average age of an ER nurse is 43.6 years
  • Over 78 percent of ER nurses are female compared to a little over 20 percent male.
  • 2 percent of ERs work in emergency rooms
