This week’s edition of the Traveler’s Guide to Nursing and Allied Health reviews U.S. News & World Report’s Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs.
Looking to advance your nursing career? The U.S. News & World Report 2023 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs may provide some guidance. The annual survey ranked schools using five categories to determine the country’s premiere online program. A master’s degree is a prerequisite for many nursing specialties, such as nurse practitioner, nursing educator, and nurse anesthetist, and can lead to positions in leadership or administration. There were several ties in the Top 20, and once again the University of South Carolina took the top spot.

Stony Brook University-SUNY (Stony Brook, NY)
Boise State University in Bosie, Idaho was one of eight schools that tied for 10th place. Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis (Indianapolis, IN), Rush University (Chicago, IL), University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL), University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (Aurora, CO), University of Louisiana-Lafayette (Lafayette, LA), University of Nevada-Las Vegas (Las Vegas, NV), and University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston (Galveston, TX) rounded out the top 17. A tie between East Carolina University (Greenville, NC), Thomas Jefferson University (Philadelphia, PA), and University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT) rounded out the Top 20.
Ranking Methodology
Programs were judged on five weighted categories.
Engagement (30 percent) Ability of nurses to collaborate with fellow students in classes and clinical settings, with accessible and responsive instructors who create a rewarding experience that encourages students to complete their degrees in a timely manner.
Faculty Credentials and Training (20 percent) Instructors with credentials equal to those of on-campus-based programs and university provided resources to train instructors in distance learning.
Peer Assessment (20 percent) High-ranking officials accounting for intangible factors affecting program quality beyond statistics.
Services and Technologies (20 percent) Program incorporates diverse online learning technologies allowing students greater flexibility for distance learning. Strong support structure outside of class providing learning assistance, career guidance, financial aid resources, and quality-based campus programs.
Student Excellence (10 percent) Student bodies with proven aptitudes, ambitions, and accomplishments with a track record of handling demanding coursework.
The annual survey was released as Harvard Medical School, Columbia University, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai announced they would no longer participate in the rankings, acknowledging concerns about the methodology. Nursing positions remain in high demand as the U.S. healthcare system struggles with a workforce shortage.
