Our frontline heroes have witnessed countless miracles, saving lives and restoring health. But beneath the surface of these healing institutions, a darker side lurks. From shadowy figures and strange sounds to unexplained occurrences, hospitals have become fertile ground for eerie and otherworldly encounters. Working late nights and long hours, they often witness firsthand the baffling events that give rise to ghost stories. Here are a few chilling first-account tales to remember the next time you turn off the lights and get into bed. Names were changed to protect the living and the dead.
Room 336
“Jenny” recalls strange occurrences after her patient’s death.

Working on the med-surg floor of a hospital in New Jersey was often a whirlwind of emotions. Among the many patients I cared for, “G” stood out—not for his pancreatic cancer diagnosis, but for his difficult personality. For three long months, he was cranky and irritable, taking out his frustrations on me and my colleagues. Every interaction felt like a battle.
Then, one quiet night, everything changed. As I went about my usual bedside care, G reached out and grabbed my wrist with surprising strength. His eyes, usually filled with agitation, were now soft and sincere. “I’m so sorry for all the times I took out my frustrations on you,” he said. It stopped me in my tracks. The next day, he passed away.
After his death, life on the unit resumed its chaotic rhythm, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that G’s presence lingered. I’d be walking by his room, and suddenly, the faucet would turn on, or the automatic paper towel dispenser would spring to life. “Okay, G, cut it out,” I would joke, half-laughing. But I could feel him there. I moved to a small twelve-bed unit, only to have G’s presence return. The call light for 336, his old room, would flick on, even when no one was inside. Each time I answered, I was met with silence. I’d check with the nursing staff, only to be told that everything was fine in the room. One night, the call came again, and I decided to speak directly to him. “If this is you, G,” I said softly, “it’s okay. You can move on.” After that, the calls stopped, and I never felt his presence again.
Haunted Halls
“William,” who used to work the night shift at a state institution for developmentally disabled individuals, recalled his ghostly encounter with a former patient.
One evening, I noticed a resident named Mary walking down the hall. Her long, flowing hair and pink shirt adorned with flowers made her easily recognizable. Concerned for her safety, I quickly alerted the staff that Mary had wandered off.
However, after a brief search, we found her fast asleep in her own room. Confused, I learned that Mary had an identical twin sister who had tragically passed away in that very building a decade earlier. It made me wonder—could Mary have walked in, slipped under the covers, and fallen asleep that quickly? It seemed unlikely, especially since she was wearing pajamas, not the pink shirt that the figure in the hallway had worn.
To this day, I’m left with unanswered questions. Was it truly Mary I saw, or was it the spirit of her sister wandering the halls in a place they both once called home?
Lights On, Lights Off
“Sandra” had multiple experiences where she noticed lights flickering after a death.
I had cared for a baby who tragically passed away on a subsequent shift. When I came back to work, I was assigned to the same pod where the baby had been moved as his condition worsened. I noticed the lights outside the room flickering, a strange occurrence that seemed to coincide with the baby’s passing.
Similarly, during my recent orientation in the adult ICU, I was assigned to a patient in comfort care. Later that night, I observed the lights flickering outside another patient’s room. However, that patient has passed away the night before.
I’ve never been one to believe ghost stories, but I can’t help but think there has to be something to the idea of life after death and the transference of energy.
Spooky Sailor

“Sam” shared a ghostly encounter with a coworker.
We all experience moments of doubt and exuberant imagination, especially during late-night shifts. However, when multiple people witness an inexplicable event, it becomes difficult to dismiss it as a mere illusion.
I used to work in a nursing home with a lot of dementia patients. One night, I was walking down a hallway with one of the orderlies when suddenly, the patient’s usual chatter and shouting ceased. It was completely quiet. As I turned to my orderly, I caught a glimpse of a small figure walking down the hall. The figure looked like a young boy in some version of a sailor outfit. He walked into an empty room while the orderly and I stood frozen. A moment later, the patients’ chatter started back up. A coworker later told me that when the hospital first opened, this was a children’s ward.
