U.S. News & World Report released its best jobs in America for 2024, and nurse practitioner came out on top! NP was named the No. 1 job overall and the best job in healthcare. Additionally, nurse practitioner was named the career with the most job security. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 45% job growth for nurse practitioners between 2022 and 2032, or an additional 118,600 jobs. Nurse practitioners earn an average of $121,610 annually.

Also ranked among the top healthcare jobs were: Nurse anesthetist ranked No. 6, registered nurse No. 10, respiratory therapist No. 12, pharmacist No. 15, nurse midwife No. 21, and radiation therapist No. 24.
Results were based U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, including workplace conditions, work pace, and telework options. The publication acknowledged that “career satisfaction is subjective,” but there are “universally” desired qualities. The rankings were comprised of the same jobs considered in 2023, which were chosen according to predicted openings.

The number of available nurse practitioners more than doubled between 2010 and 2017 and is predicted to be the fastest-growing occupation for the next ten years. At the same time, workforce shortages continue to plague facilities across the country. The NP workforce is nearly 80 percent white and remains female-dominated, with men making up only 12 percent of all NPs, RNs, and LPNs. Additionally, less than 25 percent of nurses are under the age of 40.
