This week’s edition of the Traveler’s Guide to Nursing and Allied Health explores 5 destinations to consider for a spring break travel assignment.
The beauty of travel nursing and allied health is working when you want, where you want. Punxsutawney Phil may have seen his shadow on Groundhog Day, forecasting an extended winter, but travelers have the power to kickstart their springtime fun with their next assignment. Here’s a look at some of the hottest spots to enjoy Spring Break 2023.
Arizona

Lake Havasu has long been a popular spring break destination and alternative to Caribbean hot spots such as Cancun. Lake Havasu is just a 3-hour drive from Phoenix, a 2.5-hour drive from Las Vegas, and a 4.5-hour drive from Los Angeles. The lake was created by the construction of Parker Dam in the 1930s on the Colorado River and is split between California and Arizona. Travelers can go boating, jet-skiing, fishing, ATVing, take a hot air balloon ride, or enjoy beach activities such as volleyball. There are multiple parks along the lake, including Lake Havasu State Park and Lake Havasu City, with plenty of restaurants and nightlife for those looking to revel in the spring break crowds. Travelers will enjoy mild temperatures, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Havasu Regional Medical Center ranks “high performing” in one procedure by U.S. News & World Report.
Colorado

Not all Travelers want to score some tan lines on their spring break. For nurses and medtechs looking to hit the slopes and catch big air, head to the Rocky Mountain state. Multiple Colorado resorts offer spring break deals and fresh powder so you can get in some runs after your shift ends. Aspen, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, and Winter Park are all offering deals. Of course, you don’t have to ski to enjoy a cold weather spring break. Snowshoeing, snowmobile rides, sledding, tubbing, and spa time are all popular activities at or around resort areas. Florida

Fort Lauderdale has instituted a lot of changes since the city reigned as the spring break capital. More upscale hotels and ordinances against drinking on the beach have cut down on the rowdiness, but Florida is still a top destination for springtime surf and sand. Panama City Beach on the Panhandle is a major destination for college crowds as is Tampa−St. Pete on the Gulf coast and Daytona Beach just east of Orlando. Miami is always a tourist hot spot no matter what time of year and just a four-hour drive south lands Travelers in the ultimate laidback destination Key West. Average highs across the southern half of the state will range in the 70s and 80s with the warmest temps usually in the southernmost city. Three Florida hospitals have been ranked among the top 100 nationally. Additionally, facilities in Tampa, Miami Beach, Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando are ranked “high performing” by U.S. News & World Report.
Southern California

Southern California was hit hard with winter storms recently, but the snow and participation have only enhanced the beauty and options of spring break in the Golden State. Big Bear, Mt. Baldy, and Snow Summit Mountain Resort were all open as of March 3. For Travelers looking to escape the cold, head to Palm Springs, Catalina Island, or some of the best beaches on the west coast, including Mission Bay in San Diego County, Dana Point in Orange County, and Malibu in Los Angeles County. Travelers can also scratch their theme park itch at Universal Studios and Disneyland. Los Angeles is home to two of the top five hospitals, cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA Medical Center, in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.
Texas

Everything is bigger in Texas, including Spring Break. South Padre Island continues to be one of the top destinations for students, families, couples, and singles. A barrier island off the coast of south Texas, Travelers will enjoy the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and an array of activities ranging from water sports to nature tours. While many of the more high-energy activities such as jet skiing and spring break-related events are held on the beach or nearby bars and hotels, Travelers can also take a horseback ride, visit a sea turtle rehabilitation center, or go on a dolphin-watching cruise nearby. Springtime temperatures in South Padre are very comfortable with average highs in the 70s and lows in the 60s. There are several hospitals ranked as high performing by U.S. News & World Report in nearby Weslaco, Edinburg, Mission, and McAllen.
