Traveler’s Guide to Nursing and Allied Health: Nursing Hot Spots

The healthcare workforce shortage and related facility and unit closings have received extensive media coverage. With the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a 6 percent growth in RN jobs between 2022 and 2032, Travelers are eagerly waiting to see where to book their next assignment. Wait no further. The Health Resources and Services Administration released its workforce projections for 2020-2035, spotlighting the states and specialties that will most need help.

Nationally, HRSA projects a shortage of 78,610 full-time equivalent RNs in 2025 with the gap decreasing to 63,720 in 2030. Metro areas will have a small surplus of 1 percent in 2035, while non-metro areas will experience shortages of 13 percent in 2025 and 9 percent in 2030, settling at 2 percent in 2035.
