Runners laced up their sneakers bright and early Thanksgiving morning and headed to Fort Lauderdale Beach for a time-honored tradition combining fitness, festivity, and philanthropy—the 12th Annual Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute Fort Lauderdale Turkey Trot. More than 4,300 participants arrived at Las Olas Oceanside Park in Fort Lauderdale shortly after sunrise for the 5k race along A1A.
Participants enjoyed a gorgeous view of Fort Lauderdale Beach while raising money for a good cause. Proceeds from the event benefitted Leadership Broward Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County, whose programs help strengthen the local community in large and small ways. The first 3000 to cross the finish line were awarded a 20230 Turkey Trot medal.
Tom the Turkey was one of the biggest hits of the day, leading participants in the pre-race warm-up, posing for selfies, and handing out medals. MedPro Healthcare Staffing CEO Liz Tonkin was among the runners and finished with a final time of 32:27, averaging a 10:27 mile.

Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute was the event title sponsor and Chief of Adult Cardiac Medical Services Dr. Ralph Levy spoke before the race. Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute, part of the Memorial Healthcare System, is nationally recognized for its expertise in diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for a range of complex heart and vascular conditions.
Event volunteers set up tables, cut bananas and oranges, and handed out medals and awards, among other various tasks. The Turkey Trot was a great opportunity for Explorers to enjoy the beautiful South Florida weather and each other’s company before heading out to healthcare facilities across the country.
