How To Handle An Emotional Assignment As An Allied Health Professional

Are you an Allied health professional who is currently on a challenging assignment that can have you feeling emotional at times? It is normal to run into assignments that are harder to cope with than others, as each assignment brings new patients, staff members, and feelings.

This emotional rollercoaster can take a toll on your overall health and well-being. In order to ensure you don’t let emotional stress get the best of you, try one of these coping techniques.

  1. Put time aside for things you enjoy: If you love painting or reading, be sure to put aside some time for these activities. Having the time to enjoy what makes you happy can help balance out the emotionally stressful situations you encounter in your healthcare facility.
  2. Exercise! Making time to do some yoga, go for a walk with your dog, or just go for a run can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. Exercise releases endorphins and other “feel-good” chemicals in the brain.
  3. Take a hot shower or bath: Taking a warm shower after a long day’s work can help wash away the stress and prepare you for sleep. The raise of your body’s temperature thanks to the warm water followed by the drop in temperature you experience after stepping into an air conditioned environment can help relax your body and mind.
  4. Call a friend or family member: Sometimes the best way to feel better after a long day of facing a challenging situation is to talk about something joyful or funny with someone close to you. It’s always been said  that laughter is the best medicine, so call up a loved one and ask them to tell you a nice story or have them talk about a happy experience or memory.
